Here are four hot tips:
1. Are you using your central heating system efficiently?
Reducing your room thermostat by just 1°C can save up to 10% on your heating costs so set it to the lowest temperature at which you feel comfortable. For most people, 18 to 21°C is comfortable range.
Set the temperature of your radiator valves - 1 is low, 5 is high. Set them to a low temperature in unused rooms and a higher setting in rooms you want to be warmer.
If you think any part of your heating system isn't working correctly please report it to us. If you have a hot water tank, it should be insulated - if it isn't let us know and we can come and fit a jacket for you.
2. Do you know how to get the best from your night storage heater?
If you have a night storage heater make sure you are on a tariff that offers a cheaper rate for electricity overnight, e.g. 'Economy 7' (contact your fuel supplier to check). Make sure you are using the heater correctly so that you have enough heat stored to last you through the day.

Fuel Vouchers
If you have a prepayment meter and you're struggling to pay your fuel bills, you could be eligible for fuel top-up vouchers. These aren't always available if you have a smart meter. We may be able to help you access vouchers depending on where you live. Ask us for details.

Anyone getting a means-tested benefit, with young children under five or someone in the household with a disability may qualify for a £140 discount on their electricity bill. Pensioners getting Guarantee Credit should be automatically enrolled onto the scheme. The discount is separate from the Cold Weather Payment or Winter Fuel Payment.
Contact your energy supplier directly or click here to see if you're eligible.
Winter Fuel Payment
This is a tax‑free payment to help older people with heating costs. Most people born before 25 September 1957, who receive the State Pension or other qualifying benefit, will receive the payment of between £100 and £300.
You only need to apply if you don’t receive State Pension or certain benefits, or if the Department for Work and Pensions asks you to.
Be aware of scam texts and emails — the government will never ask for bank details by text or email.
