Interview tips

Your interview is your chance to really sell yourself and show an employer that you are the right candidate for the job.

The key to a successful interview is preparation!

Before your interview:

  • Read the job description carefully so you understand what the role involves and what the employer is looking for.
  • Learn about the company before your interview. Look at their website to understand their values, what they do, and why you’d like to work for them.
  • Prepare examples of your experience. Think of times when you’ve shown your skills, such as giving good customer service or handling a difficult situation and how you resolved it.
  • Make notes if it helps you feel more confident. You can bring them to your interview—just let the interviewer know you may refer to them.
  • Plan your journey in advance. If you’re using public transport, allow extra time in case of delays. If you’re driving, think about traffic and parking.
  • Get ready the day before. Choose your outfit, make sure it’s clean and appropriate, and aim to look smart and presentable on the day.

During the interview:

  • Arrive 10–15 minutes early. This gives you time to settle in, relax, and prepare before your interview starts.
  • Try to stay calm. It’s normal to feel nervous, and your interviewer will understand. If you feel flustered, take a deep breath or have a sip of water.
  • Listen carefully to each question and answer as clearly as you can. Try to include examples to show your skills and experience.
  • If you’re unsure, ask. If you didn’t hear or can’t remember the question, it’s okay to ask the interviewer to repeat it—don’t guess.
  • Prepare some questions to ask. This shows you’re interested in the role and want to learn more about the job and the company.

After the interview:

  • If you’re successful, the employer will contact you. They will confirm your start date and send you any forms or information you need before you begin.
  • If you’re unsuccessful, the employer will still let you know. It’s a good idea to ask for feedback, as this can help you improve and feel more confident in future interviews.
