Enjoying the summer safely

Enjoying the summer safely

Whether you're staying at home or going away for a few days, it's worth thinking about how to stay safe during the warmer weather. We've put together a few reminders to help you make the most of the summer.

Hot weather

Hot weather can affect anyone, but older people, young children and people with health conditions are more at risk.

Drink plenty of water, keep your home as cool as possible and try to avoid being out in the hottest part of the day.

There's lots more useful advice about how to stay safe in hot weather on the NHS website.

Barbecues

The recent hot, dry weather means there's a greater risk of accidental fires.

If you're using a barbecue, keep it on a stable, non-flammable surface and well away from dry grass, bushes, fences and anything else that could catch fire. Never leave it unattended and make sure it's completely cool before disposing of the ashes. You can find more barbecue safety tips on this page.

Disposable barbecues get extremely hot and can easily start a fire if they're placed directly on dry ground. We ask customers not to use disposable barbecues during periods of hot, dry weather.

Visit the Avon Fire and Rescue website for their advice on preventing fires in hot weather.

If you'd rather use a public barbecue area, check your local council's website to see what's available near you. Bath & North East Somerset Council, for example, has barbecue facilities in Royal Victoria Park.

Paddling pools

Paddling pools are a great way to cool down on a hot day, but they should only be used in your own private garden. They aren't permitted in communal gardens or shared outdoor spaces.

Children should always be supervised around water, however shallow it is, and paddling pools should be emptied after use.

Going away?

If you're heading off on holiday, don't forget to lock all doors and windows before you leave. If you can, ask someone you trust to keep an eye on your home and wait until you're back before posting holiday photos on social media.

Check out this advice from the police about keeping your home secure while you're away.

Look out for your neighbours

If you have an older neighbour or someone nearby with a health condition, checking in on them during very hot weather can make a real difference.
