Victor da Cunha, Curo CEO says:
"This Budget signals a promising start from the Labour Government in supporting the construction of new affordable homes, and we’re encouraged to see housing recognised as a central part of their growth strategy.
To build on this, we now need a long-term national housing strategy, that addresses the need for systemic change. Reforms to planning, land, skills, supply chains and funding must be sequenced and calibrated to support the effective functioning of the entire housing system.
A sustainable, long-term rent settlement is also essential, grounded in a clear understanding of the purpose of social rents and capital subsidy. We look forward to working with the Government to drive this reform, as we recognise it’s only through a co-creative approach that we can create meaningful ownership and the capability to end this housing crisis within a generation.
Curo is a Strategic Partner, and so enjoys the benefits of secured long term grant funding for new homes but we congratulate the Government in releasing a further £500m for the Affordable Homes Programme, which we know will enable many critical projects to proceed in our region and beyond.
Announcements on planning reforms, a review of Right to Buy discounts, and £3.4bn Warm Homes Plan, is also welcome and part of the essential foundations needed to build that much needed National Housing Strategy."
