Remembering VE Day

Together over tea

We joined residents at Hawthorn Court in Keynsham as they came together to mark VE Day with music, stories and scones – thanks to a special funding pot for community events.

On Tuesday 6 May, residents gathered at Hawthorn Court, for one of three VE Day celebrations organised by the Curo Choice team.

The room was dressed for the occasion – with Union Jack bunting, patriotic plates and a striking newspaper print announcing ‘War is over’, just like it did back on 8 May 1945.

A large VE Day display features a mock newspaper front page with the headline “WAR IS OVER – 8th May 1945”, flanked by two life-size black silhouettes of World War II soldiers. The setup is indoors, decorated with Union Jack bunting, and includes a sunset painting and a large photo of wartime celebrations in the background. The display commemorates the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

As the music played and the afternoon tea was served, residents shared stories, reflected on family memories and gave thanks for those who fought for freedom.

Fay, a Curo customer, said: “My father used to tell me stories of the war. I’m proud of anyone that had to go through that time – it was very tough.”

Holly Reed, Livewell Officer, helped organise the event and secured £3,000 funding from the joint Curo and Travis Perkins community fund.

“Being able to access this kind of funding means we can put on a fantastic event, with good food, and brilliant entertainment from singer, Frankie Jones, which created a great atmosphere,” said Holly. “These occasions really matter to the community – and we’re so grateful we can keep doing them.”

Janet, a local resident, added: “Curo always puts everything into the events they hold. It makes us feel like we matter. It’s lovely for us all to get together and listen to music we love – and we’ve been treated to a delicious afternoon tea!”

Simon Pearson, Customer Operations Manager at Travis Perkins, said: “We’re really happy to have supported the event and enjoyed coming along today to see the difference it’s made to the community.”
