Curo is delighted to help honour the work of Knowle West community hero, Bert Abrams. A blue plaque, recently unveiled by Deputy Lord Mayor of Bristol, Cllr Andrew Varney, as part of a new affordable housing development, celebrates his decades-long commitment to youth work.
The blue plaque stands at the entrance to Curo’s 100% affordable Broad Plain development and the newly dedicated Bert Abrams Close. The site was previously the home of Broad Plain Boys’ Club, of which Bert was a leading light.
Arthur Basil “Bert” Abrams MBE (1912-1995) was a passionate advocate for young people and dedicated his life to improving their lives. His commitment to the Broad Plain club was truly remarkable – serving in various roles from 1926 to 1978. He was also instrumental in setting up a number of other youth clubs across the city.
Bert also served with distinction on Bristol City Council and represented Hengrove Ward as a Labour councillor for 27 years. Bert’s youth work was recognised with an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List of 1976.
We’re delighted to help celebrate Bert’s amazing story and would like to thank Bristol Civic Society and Filwood Chase History Society for helping to make it happen.
The new development offers 47 affordable homes for the local community and comprises one, two and three-bedroom flats, maisonettes and houses, 31 of them offered for shared ownership purchase.
