With Autumn in full swing, Halloween and Bonfire Night are just around the corner. While both holidays promise lots of fun, it’s important to stay safe while celebrating.
Here are some helpful tips to ensure that your celebrations are not only memorable but also safe from unwanted fires.
- Choose LED lights over candles - While the flickering of real candles can create a ghostly ambiance, they also pose a significant fire risk, especially in a bustling household or near flammable costumes. Opt for battery-operated LED candles or glow sticks to light up your pumpkins and decorations. They're not only safer but last longer too!
- Keep decorations and fireworks away from heat sources – Fireworks and many Halloween decorations, especially the ones made from paper or dried flowers, are highly flammable. Ensure they are kept well away from open flames, heaters, and light bulbs.
- Buy quality fireworks - Only purchase fireworks that meet the British Safety Standard – these will have BS7114 written on the box. This means they meet specific safety standards.
- Visit local celebrations - Bonfires and fireworks aren’t allowed on Curo land, but there are lots of locally organised events that will be sure to delight with some dazzling displays.
- Keep kids away from fireworks and flames – Over half of all firework injuries are suffered each year by children. Make sure to keep the kids far away from lit fireworks and be extra careful with sparklers.
- Be considerate of pets – Animals don’t like fireworks. Make sure you’re being a considerate neighbour by letting your neighbours know if you plan to let off any fireworks.
- Check your smoke alarms - Ensure that smoke alarms are working correctly. Test them by pressing the test button and replace batteries if needed.
- Mind your cooking - Halloween treats and bonfire toffee apples are sure to be tasty, but with the excitement of the festivities, it's easy to forget what's cooking in the oven or on the stove. Keep an eye on your cooking and make sure to keep the flames clear of any trailing costumes.
- Keep exits clear - Ensure that the communal spaces in your home are clear from decorations or any obstacles. For the safety and wellbeing of all residents, we request residents keep these spaces free from clutter. Not only do these items present a fire hazard, but they can also obstruct emergency exits.
By following these simple fire safety guidelines, we can ensure that the only shocks we get are from the costumes and fireworks - not from fire hazards.
