Liz Potter, Chair of the Curo Board
Liz Potter (Group Chair)
Liz Potter is a very experienced board chair, independent governance consultant and executive coach. As Chair of Orbit up to 2013, she led the organisation through a period of considerable change and growth, setting up a commercial development subsidiary, steering through a successful merger and, importantly, achieving top-quartile customer satisfaction. Since then she has focused on improving governance, working with high-performing boards. She is currently a board member at Housing and Care 21 and Care & Repair England. Liz has a strong strategic understanding of the housing and care and support sectors, having previously worked as Director of Policy for the National Housing Federation and Regional Manager of NACRO Housing.
David stepped down as Chief Executive of GreenSquare Group in 2013 after a long and successful career in the housing sector spanning 40 years, 25 of which had been at chief executive level leading three different organisations. GreenSquare is a major housing and social investment agency working in Wiltshire, Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire which has developed a range of commercial activities to support its core work of providing affordable housing and investing in local communities. Since stepping down David is working as a personal and business coach and facilitator. He is also a non-executive board member of the Swindon and Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership. He has a range of non-executive experience including serving on the South West Regional Committee of the National Housing Federation for a number of years and as its Chair from 2009-11. David is passionate about the work of housing associations. He joined the Curo Enterprise Board in 2013 and the main board in 2016 to help and support the Group grow and broaden its range of commercial activities.
Elaine specialises in customer experience, contact centre transformation and continuous improvement together with multi-channel selling strategies. She is passionate about continuous improvement of organisations to drive customer centricity, multi-channel strategies and contact centre and sales brilliance. Elaine has lived and worked in the UK, the US, Singapore and Poland and is currently the Director of Customer Experience at TNT UK. She has been a school governor, enjoys being outdoors rambling and is a Bath Rugby Club season ticket holder.
Rick de Blaby (Chair, Curo Enterprise)
Rick is currently Executive Vice-Chairman of Get Living London a large scale residential investment company. Previously he has held the roles of Chief Executive for United House Group Holdings and MEPC. He has over 35 years’ experience in development and investment in both commercial and residential sectors and has a particular interest in regeneration and design. Rick is also Non-Executive Chairman of Miller Developments, Non-Executive Director of Altitude Real Estate, Chair of the Kinetic Foundation Charity and a mentor to students of Estate Management at Oxford Brookes University. Rick is also a keen windsurfer and cyclist.
Victor da Cunha
Vic joined the business in 2011, initially focusing on integrating three housing associations into one, bringing together our culture, governance and strategy. From these foundations, Curo was formed in 2013 as a re-energised commercially savvy business with a strong social purpose. Today Curo has more than doubled its turnover and has a pipeline of over 2,000 new homes in development. It has established itself as an ambitious business with a regional and national reputation for innovation. Under Vic’s leadership, Curo has become an Investors In People ‘Gold' employer, has been ranked 44th best company to work for in the UK by the Sunday Times and has won many awards for our services and our new homes and regeneration activities. Vic is Chair of Homes for the South West - a collaboration between housing associations working together to increase affordable housing supply in our region. Together these organisations can deliver 16,000 new homes between 2019 and 2024. Vic is also a Governor of Bath College, one of our local partners, and is active on the Bath Chamber of Commerce where he sits on the economic development sub-committee.
Sonya Chowdhury (Co-opted Board Director)
Sonya Chowdhury is Chief Executive of UK health charity, Action for M.E. She has over 25 years’ experience of working in the public and voluntary sector in paid, voluntary and non-executive director roles. Sonya brings extensive leadership and governance experience. She is passionate about creating change to improve the lives of children and adults and has dedicated her career to this after her first role as a qualified social worker working in the fostering, adoption and child protection fields. Sonya is also working at an international level seeking change for people living with ME and leads an international alliance of national patient organisations to achieve this. Sonya has lived in Bath all her life although enjoys travelling and experiencing new communities and cultures. Sonya has two children and enjoys time with the family and socialising, live music and enjoying life.
Angela Dupont, MBE DL (Independent Board Director, Curo Places)
Angela has over 25 years’ experience as a board chairman and non-executive director. She recently stepped down as Chairman of DCH after seven years, having helped to steer the organisation through a successful merger with Knightstone and maintained financial strength and high performance throughout her term. Prior to working in housing, Angela was Chairman of Yeovil District Hospital NHS FT, ranked as one of the UK's best healthcare employers and delivering excellent clinical care. She was originally involved in mental and community health, and hospice care after a successful career as a stockbroker. She is currently Chairman of Somerset Care, one of the largest not-for-profit care home providers in South West England, delivering residential, nursing and dementia care in 27 homes, community care and learning disabilities support. She has a proven track record in governance, risk and change management and is passionate about valuing and supporting staff.
Simon is Executive Director of Finance and Strategy at Curo. He joined the Group in November 2013 bringing a wealth of commercial experience to the company. Since joining Curo Simon has led the fund-raising activities and business transformation programme resulting in substantial improvements in performance. He has also been heavily involved in establishing Curo's commercial house-builder business. Simon joined the Board of Curo in February 2017.
David Haywood (Independent Board Director, Curo Choice)
David was Vice President of R&D Supply Chain at AstraZeneca 2010-2012 where he was accountable for the supply of all GMP materials to development studies. Previously he was VP of Global Process R&D from 2002-2010 and between 1980 and 1997 he worked for Glaxo Wellcome in both R&D and Operations. David is a chemist by background having obtained his degree and PhD from the University of Kent at Canterbury in 1978. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 1992. David was Chair of AstraZeneca India Private Ltd and a trustee of the AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust for seven years. He is currently a Director of Semta, the sector skills organisation. David joined Curo in 2013 as an independent member of the Governance & Remuneration Committee and became a member of the Board in October 2016.
Jerry Loy (Independent Member, Audit & Assurance Committee)
Jerry is a member of Curo's Audit & Risk Assurance Committee and has over 20 years' experience of working with boards of directors and audit committees. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales. He has a solid background in strategic and organisational planning having experienced and led the start-up and development of companies, and established appropriate corporate governance structures. He has led a number of successful projects, including establishing two banks, the implementation of new systems as well as leading a project to outsource operations and IT. Jerry also has a strong commitment and interest in personal development and is a member of various boards including two educational establishments and a national youth homelessness organisation. In his spare time, he enjoys being with his family and dog, playing tennis and coaching a youth football team.
Richard Stillwell (Senior Independent Director)
Richard spent most of his executive business career at ICI plc. He held posts in Europe, Asia and the USA. His final position was as Executive Vice President of Specialty Chemicals as a member of the ICI Executive. Prior to that he had briefly been ICI’s HR & Safety, Health & Environment Director. He left ICI in 2000 and retrained to be a barrister and was called to the Bar in 2002. He became a tenant at 7 Bedford Row and practised for approximately five years. Since 1996 Richard has held a variety of non-executive directorships at companies including BBA plc, Fiberweb plc, Penna plc, Scott Bader Company Limited where he was Chairman, TBI Limited and St Ives plc where he is currently Chairman. Richard lives in North Oxfordshire. He has just finished a five-year term as Chair of the Governing Body of his local primary school.
Chris Wilson (Chair, Audit & Assurance Committee)
Chris is a Chartered Accountant. He retired as a partner from KPMG in 2016 after a career of over 30 years in audit. With KPMG he worked extensively with housing associations for more than 20 years and led the firm's housing practice from 2006 until 2016. He has extensive experience in audit and assurance with housing associations, was a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants social housing sub-committee for many years, and a member of the working party that developed the 2014 Statement of Recommended Practice for housing association accounts. He was a board member of Orbit Housing Association between 1996 and 2005 and is currently a board member with White Horse Housing which provides low cost housing in rural communities in the West of England.
