Curo lifehacks: How to thaw a frozen condensate pipe on your boiler

If your gas boiler is making an unusual noise, it may have a frozen ‘condensate pipe’. If it’s a Valiant boiler, it may be showing an error code of F28 or F77. You may be able to thaw this frozen pipe yourself.

  • If you can, go outside and look for a white plastic pipe coming out of the wall. This may have frozen water in it.

  • Try to defrost this pipe by slowly pouring hot but not boiling water over it. If you have a hot water bottle, put this on the pipe.

  • This video from British Gas shows you how to do this – note that you may not have the same type of boiler and the condensate pipe may be larger.
