Wellbeing hampers delivered to sheltered housing residents across South Gloucestershire

Pictured: Curo colleague Kelly England makes a special Christmas delivery to sheltered housing resident Barry who lives in Hanham.

For some people living on their own, Christmas can be a lonely time. Every December our sheltered housing colleagues try to bring a little extra festive cheer with some special deliveries.

In South Gloucestershire, Sheltered Housing Officers Kelly England and Sophie Bryant organised and delivered Christmas wellbeing hampers to residents at all the Curo sheltered schemes across the area.

Kelly, pictured above, said: “Sophie and I made up Christmas hampers of hot chocolate, shortbread, satsumas and good old mince pies, along with Christmas word-searches and notepads. We donned our Christmas jumpers and reindeer antlers to spread a little Christmas joy across Curo’s sheltered housing schemes in South Gloucestershire.

“We received lovely feedback from customers saying how nice it was to be thought of at this time of year, and we enjoyed being able to put smiles on our customers’ faces at a time of year that can feel really lonely and isolating.”

Christmas angels deliver festive cheer to 2,000 sheltered residents

Last week more than 2,000 people living in Curo’s sheltered housing across Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol and North Somerset received a Christmas wellbeing food and activity gift delivery, along with a Christmas card designed by 14-year-old Curo resident Gina Paradise.

The gift packs, made and delivered with stringent COVID-safety measures in place at every stage, were hand delivered by colleagues from teams across Curo housing association.

Curo Livewell Officer Michelle Nash, who helped to organise the deliveries, said: “In normal times we would have held several Christmas parties and dinners across the area but were unable to hold any festive gatherings this year. We decided instead to spread some Christmas cheer a little differently and, with the help of some of our amazing Curo colleagues, we managed to deliver Christmas goodies to well over 2,000 customers in just four days.”

Every customer received a Christmas card, a food box of treats including scones and jam, mince pies, an orange, coffee or hot chocolate with marshmallows, sweets, plus a wordsearch and a writing gift set.

With the writing sets, residents were invited to write about a memory from their past or from this extraordinary lockdown year. The winning entries will receive a prize and Curo hopes to publish a collection of the short stories in the new year for residents to share with each other.

Michelle added: “We’ve had heart-warming feedback from so many of our customers, with one resident telling us that the gesture made her feel that she was not forgotten, and another describing the team as angels.”

Throughout lockdown Curo, along with partners St John’s Foundation Trust, have put on COVID-safe events held outside or online to help bring people together and help people feel less lonely. These have included a series of doorstep concerts, VE Day celebrations and commemorations for Remembrance Day.

All Curo sheltered housing and Livewell customers get regular contact from their dedicated teams who check on their wellbeing and provide tailored support, and that has continued throughout the pandemic and lockdowns, with COVID-19 safety measures in place.

Apprentices’ Cosy Curo Christmas party

On Friday 7 December, apprentices at Curo held a Christmas party for 50 elderly residents living in our sheltered housing.

Dean Smith is one of the team of 16 apprentices across Curo who organised the event: “We wanted to do something special, as apprentices, for the community this Christmas – in particular for people who might be lonely at Christmas. That’s where the Cosy Christmas idea came from. We organised everything ourselves, from the food to the raffle prizes and gift bags, and we also arranged transport. It’s been really heart-warming to see how much the event has meant to our customers.”

The Cosy Curo Christmas featured a Christmas buffet, carol singers, bingo, a quiz and a raffle which raised over £100 for Curo’s charity of the year – the Cancer Centre at the Bath Royal United Hospital.

Curo customer Carole Williams, who lives in Combe Down, Bath, said: “It’s been very enjoyable and it means a lot for myself and especially for people older than me to come out and mix with other people”.

Curo runs activities throughout the year at the housing association’s network of Livewell Hubs across Bath & North East Somerset. Over Christmas the hubs will be hosting many more Christmas lunches and parties for elderly people living locally. Find out more about the hubs here.

As well as welcoming residents from Curo’s sheltered schemes, the event was also for customers of Curo’s Independent Living Service which provides support to help people stay in their own home. The service is available to anyone regardless of whether they rent or own their home.
