Fire training at Berkeley House

There were dramatic scenes at Berkeley House in Bath on Friday, 6 September.

Fire officers from Avon Fire and Rescue Service descended on the Snow Hill block of flats, with two fire engines outside, a ladder reaching almost to the top of the building, and smoke filling a flat on the highest floor.

There was no need for alarm, however, as it was a planned training exercise to ensure that in the event of a real emergency the fire service will be able to respond swiftly and effectively to keep our customers safe.

The fire officers tested how high they could get the ladder, and then used the hose to see how much coverage of the building they could get with the water, and confirmed that they could reach all floors on that side of the building.

An empty flat on the eighth floor was filled with synthetic smoke and a dummy casualty was hidden in the bedroom so the fire officers could simulate a real life rescue. The smoke machine was left running for 30 minutes to check that the fire doors were effective at containing smoke.

Matt Bryant, Curo’s Fire Safety Team Leader Community Services, said: “The safety of our customers is our priority, and we are always very happy to work with Avon Fire and Rescue Service, to allow them to carry out training in our properties.

“Using the simulated smoke allowed us to test how the fire doors are working, and it was great to see how well the flat door prevented the smoke from reaching the communal areas.”

“Opening the door for just 90 seconds filled the area with smoke and the visibility was almost zero. In a real fire this smoke would be thick, black smoke and it would almost certainly be toxic. This really highlights the importance of keeping communal areas clear.

“In a situation like this, when you can’t see, the only way to get around is to use the wall as a guide. Any items left in the communal areas become a potential obstacle that could prevent a safe escape.

“It also highlights the importance of keeping communal areas clear. These areas are often escape routes, so if an item in a communal area caught fire, could mean the whole area filling with smoke, making it difficult and dangerous to get out.”

Bath Fire Station, Watch Manager - Rich Wheeler said, “Training in real buildings is essential within the work we carry out. It means that our crews are familiar with the environment and their surroundings in the case of a real fire. It also highlights any learnings we may need to have that can save us time in real life emergencies. Being able to work with organisations such as Curo is always a pleasure as it is clear they are committed to offering a high standard of safety for their residents.”

In the last year, we invested more than £8m in fire safety measures across its properties.

11 ways to stay cool when the heat is on

If you're struggling to stay cool in the heat, follow these tips from the NHS for coping in hot weather.

Shut windows and pull down the shades when it's hotter outside. You can open the windows for ventilation when it's cooler.

Avoid the heat: stay out of the sun and don't go out between 11am and 3pm (the hottest part of the day) if you're vulnerable to the effects of heat.

Keep rooms cool by using shades or reflective material outside the windows. If this isn't possible, use light-coloured curtains and keep them closed (metallic blinds and dark curtains can make the room hotter).

Have cool baths or showers, and splash yourself with cool water.

Drink cold drinks regularly, such as water and diluted fruit juice. Avoid excess alcohol, caffeine (tea, coffee and cola) or drinks high in sugar.

Listen to alerts on the radio, TV and social media about keeping cool.

Plan ahead to make sure you have enough supplies, such as food, water and any medications you need.

Identify the coolest room in the house so you know where to go to keep cool.

Wear loose, cool clothing, and a hat and sunglasses if you go outdoors.

Check up on friends, relatives and neighbours who may be less able to look after themselves.

If you have concerns about an uncomfortably hot house that's affecting your health or someone else’s, get medical advice.

Contact our Independent Living Service if you or someone you know needs support at home.

Community brings back pub-based dementia drop-in

A dementia-friendly drop-in group in Portishead held a special event on Friday 4 March, the start of Social Prescribing Week, to celebrate and thank the community champions who have helped the group to survive and thrive through the COVID pandemic.

The monthly support group, held at the Portishead Poacher pub on the first Friday of every month between 11am and 1pm, welcomes anyone living with dementia, and their carers.

Many of the drop-in’s regulars are referred to the group by doctors and other health professionals through what is called a ‘social prescription’.

The celebration event took place at the start of Social Prescribing Week (4-10 March 2022) which celebrates and showcases how people’s health and wellbeing can be transformed through social prescribing which helps people access services like this.

A social prescription offers the kind of help that doesn’t come in a tube or a bottle. The idea behind social prescribing is to help people to have more control over their own health and find ways to improve how they feel in a way that suits them.

Pictured above: Group organiser Brenda Birkinshaw (left), Richard Dodds who attends the drop-ins with his wife Viv Dodds (right) with Curo Community Development Coordinator Sue Dixon (front, centre).

Numerous individuals, groups and organisations have come together to make these monthly events possible. These include the local pub who provide a welcoming venue at no cost, the Portishead Dementia Friendly Communities group, housing association Curo, the Alzheimer’s Society, and local charitable organisations who have fundraised for the group.

Curo runs the local Community Connect service which helps to make these connections. Curo Community Development Coordinator Sue Dixon said: “This buzzing dementia-friendly drop-in is a fantastic example of what can happen when the local community, volunteers, health professionals and local businesses come together to support each other.

“We work closely with local GPs and health services who offer patients social prescriptions and we help to link those people with activities that will boost their wellbeing and health. That can be anything from joining a walking group to attending a support group like this dementia drop-in.”

Brenda Birkinshaw, Chair of Portishead Dementia Friendly Communities, said: “The drop-in was an idea that came to fruition three years ago and is now extremely well supported. It was hugely missed through the COVID pandemic and feedback from attendees is that there is a huge need for this type of support for those living with dementia and their carers.

“Those who attend receive information and support from the professionals but most importantly from others who are currently experiencing or have experienced similar issues. We are very grateful to the Poacher staff for their support and all donations we receive from various sources.”

Ann Bye, who regularly attends the group with her partner Lesley Passey, said: “We like the chance to meet with others and share experiences and support. We also like being able to meet with Community Connect as they understand the daily challenges for people living with dementia.”

Anyone interested in attending the Portishead Dementia Friendly Coffee & Chat group can contact Brenda Birkinshaw on 07896 633900 or just call in when the drop-in is running.

Wellbeing hampers delivered to sheltered housing residents across South Gloucestershire

Pictured: Curo colleague Kelly England makes a special Christmas delivery to sheltered housing resident Barry who lives in Hanham.

For some people living on their own, Christmas can be a lonely time. Every December our sheltered housing colleagues try to bring a little extra festive cheer with some special deliveries.

In South Gloucestershire, Sheltered Housing Officers Kelly England and Sophie Bryant organised and delivered Christmas wellbeing hampers to residents at all the Curo sheltered schemes across the area.

Kelly, pictured above, said: “Sophie and I made up Christmas hampers of hot chocolate, shortbread, satsumas and good old mince pies, along with Christmas word-searches and notepads. We donned our Christmas jumpers and reindeer antlers to spread a little Christmas joy across Curo’s sheltered housing schemes in South Gloucestershire.

“We received lovely feedback from customers saying how nice it was to be thought of at this time of year, and we enjoyed being able to put smiles on our customers’ faces at a time of year that can feel really lonely and isolating.”

GP practice-based social prescribing scheme helps people improve wellbeing

Pictured, L-R: Curo Senior Link Worker James Woods and Karen Davis

People across the South West are being supported to improve their wellbeing through social prescribing schemes run by GP practices. At Curo we're involved with two social prescribing schemes and today - National Social Prescribing Day - we're celebrating the people who have made improvements to their lives by taking part.

With a social prescription, patients are connected with Link Workers who support people who may be struggling with problems such as social isolation or anxiety by connecting them to services in the community which can help. Each patient who is referred typically has six sessions with the Link Worker who is able to spend more time with a patient than a GP would during an appointment.

James Woods is a Senior Link Worker at Gordano & Mendip Primary Care Network and employed by Curo who are commissioned by Bristol, North Somerset & South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), to deliver the scheme locally. He and his team of two other Link Workers support patients across the network’s nine GP practices.

James, who has Cerebral Palsy, said being a Link Worker gives him the opportunity to support others.

He said: “I feel I have been fortunate in my life and this is a chance for me to give back to others. I use determination and tenacity to find ways around problems I face and I am able to share that with others who are struggling. I really love the job and being able to help people.”

Social prescribing recognises that our health and wellbeing are affected by a range of social, economic and environmental factors, and that the most effective prescriptions do not always come in the form of medication. Social prescribing starts with an assessment of the patient’s current situation and then the Link Worker can suggest services in the community which can help, ranging from counselling services to physical activity groups.

James said “It has been harder during the pandemic because some of the services that we would normally refer people to are not running. Also prior to the pandemic more than 70% of patients asked to see us in their homes or at the surgery. We still offer to do this but in the majority of cases we have been supporting people with phone appointments.

“Most of the people we are supporting need help with depression, anxiety and isolation and we are hoping that it won’t be long now until we will start to see people again in their own homes.”

Karen Davis, from Portishead, was referred to James last year as she was feeling very isolated and struggling with her mental health.

Karen said: “The service has been fantastic, especially during these difficult times. I really hit rock bottom but James helped me to get some things sorted out and this helped my mental health to improve. I would recommend the social prescribing scheme to anyone who is struggling.”

The International Day of People with Disabilities: 'Not all disabilities are visible'

The International Day of People with Disabilities is on 3 December. This year’s theme is about raising awareness that not all disabilities can be seen; but that all disabilities, whether ‘hidden’ or not, can impact significantly on people’s lives and are equally important.

Under the Equality Act 2010, the definition of a disability is “a physical or mental impairment that has a 'substantial' and 'long-term' negative effect on [a person’s] ability to do normal daily activities.”

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) World Report on Disability, 15% of the world’s population, or more than one billion people, are living with disability. Of this number, it’s estimated 450 million are living with a mental or neurological condition - and two-thirds of these people will not seek help or talk about it, largely due to stigma and a fear of discrimination.

We need to change this, but how?

A simple but meaningful way we can change this is by improving awareness, so that disability is easier to talk about.

There are numerous campaigns every year that help us to do this. In November for example Men's Mental Health Month offered tips on how to get through when times are tough, including:

Exercising, even if it's just a short walk.

Listening to motivational music or songs that remind you of good times or friends.

Connecting with a hobby or interest, whether online during the COVID-19 pandemic or meeting face to face once we get through the pandemic.

Or just... talk to a mate.

To view other mental health campaigns visit the Mental Health Foundation and think about how often you get involved with these campaigns. Even just talking about them at work or with friends and family means that you are raising awareness and letting people know that it's alright to talk about these things.

Talking about mental health helps cultural norms to change.

As individuals we cannot, single-handed, change institutions, but we can advocate and educate at a grassroot level, letting people know that it’s ‘OK not to be OK!’ We can support others when they need someone to talk to, review how our words and actions may hurt others, focus on positives and get the facts.

Men’s health and North Somerset - a local movement

In Somerset, Neil Harris is helping men to change the way they think about their mental health and wellbeing by setting up a Men’s Talk Club. At Curo we manage the Community Connect service in partnership with the West of England Rural Network - the service works with people over 50 who might be isolated or lonely and supports initiatives like Talk Club. We recognise that we're living through difficult times, and that can bring pressures that impact on our wellbeing. Men might not always be comfortable talking about these issues and these often-hidden pressures can cause people to feel stressed, depressed or down.

The Talk Club is a movement that’s about helping men to change how we think about mental health and stress, and creating a safe space for men to come together, talk and gain support.

Neil says: “Men’s mental health is an issue. A massive issue. And yet it is still not really talked about – there is still huge stigma about asking for help and support if you are a man. The pandemic may well have shone a light on the importance of mental health broadly but even before this the data is stark. In this country 12 men a day take their own lives. One every two hours. In 2019, there were 5,691 suicides registered in England and Wales, around ¾ of these were men.

"We all recognise that we need to work together and that if we do, we can make a real difference to the lives of men in our local area.”

If you want to know more about this movement please visit Talk Club.

At Curo we take mental health seriously, especially in today’s climate. Colleagues are supported to have a healthy work-life balance, to join wellbeing chats and to attend mental health presentations to be more aware and informed. These are often facilitated by colleagues, not professionals, and I had the opportunity recently to co-run a men’s health wellbeing event. By getting staff to run events, we take the stigma out of the subject and normalise talking about things and supporting each other.

For our North Somerset customers and community, we have many services to support those in need, including:

Working with Primary Care Networks and health providers to help patients get support in their communities, in partnership with GPs.

Temporary accommodation services for those who are homeless or are having mental health problems.

Community Connect which supports socially isolated adults over the age of 50 using the five ways to wellbeing to inspire them to connect, physically or virtually, to their community.

I’m fortunate to be one of the Wellbeing Workers who support and advocate for those in need.

Helen Yeo, who works in Public Health for North Somerset Council, highlights that while some disabilities such as anxiety or depression may be difficult for others to recognise or understand, they can be debilitating, affecting everyday life for those who suffer from them.

Helen says: “Sadly mental health problems are not rare. Nor are they exclusive to one ‘type’ of person. Prior to the Coronavirus outbreak a survey carried out by Public Health England showed 84 per cent of people in the South West have experienced early signs of poor mental health including anxiety, stress, low mood or trouble sleeping in the past 12 months.

"North Somerset Council are keen supporters of Time to Change, England's most ambitious campaign to end the stigma and discrimination faced by people who experience mental health problems.”

Please take the time to look at some of the links I’ve shared here. We can all do something to help people access support and to empower them to live with their mental health disability, especially men.

Laura, a registered dietitian and regular guest on the BBC and ITV, explains: “Diets continue to be very popular and yet all too often they let us down. Despite lots of evidence that they don’t generally work, we are drawn into the promises they make.”

In the free session, Laura will explore:

The dieting cycle – why it happens and how to break free from it.

A different way to approach your weight management which takes care of your mental health and builds your confidence.

How to eat – what does the research (not the celebrities) actually tell us.

Free resources to download.

Laura adds, “Dieting can often have quite an impact on our mental wellbeing with incidences of depression, low self-esteem and anxiety being higher in those that are overweight. On the night we’ll be raising money for Bath Mind who support people to improve and maintain their mental health and wellbeing.”

The Hub are providing the room for free. Please bring a small donation for Bath Mind to cover refreshments.

Sarah describes 'life-changing' stay at Curo's Wellbeing House

Curo’s Wellbeing House in Bath provides a retreat for people experiencing mental health distress. Staying at the Wellbeing House offers people space and support to stabilise their mood, often preventing the need to access further mental health services.

One of the many people to have benefited from a stay at the house is 'Sarah'. Sarah was referred to the Wellbeing House through the NHS, having been in hospital on a number of occasions through periods of poor mental health.

Sarah said: “I’ve been in and out of services since I was young. The Wellbeing House was the first time I’d said I need a break from everything and someone had actually answered with a solution.

“It’s the first service that has actually been there for me when I’ve tried to make the effort to do something before it gets worse.”

Sarah describes the Wellbeing House as somewhere peaceful, calm and organised that makes her feel safe.

“That stay really did change my entire life. I literally decided then and there that I was moving to Bath. I gave up all past connections.

“It’s still been hard. If I feel I’m close to dipping back into that I can come back here which I’ve done and it’s helped massively. It’s definitely been a big turning point for me.”

Sarah’s mum, 'Alex', has supported her daughter throughout and is in no doubt about the positive impact of the support offered at the Wellbeing House. “It empowered her. It put her back in control.

“There’s a kind of magic that happens at the Wellbeing House, and it’s available for everyone who stays at the house if you’re ready to receive it. And it’s really OK if not, you can just come to have a break and enjoy the peace and respite it offers.

“Looking back I wish I’d known about the Wellbeing House for myself, as there were times when I was confused, exhausted and totally overwhelmed and so unable to support my daughter properly. I would have hugely benefited from a break myself.”

Staying at The Wellbeing House is free. People in Bath & North East Somerset can access this free service by being referred by a health, social care or housing professional, or directly by visiting www.curo-group.co.uk/wellbeinghouse or calling 0300 123 2466.

Names have been changed.

With almost 400 members today, the club was set up in 2015 when local GP Practice Managers and passionate community members came together with the support of Curo's Community Connect service. Community Connect, funded by North Somerset Council, supports people with isolation and loneliness, connecting them with their communities through what's known as 'social prescribing'.

Get fit with free cardio drumming workshops at The Hub!

Our new community building, The Hub, is hosting free cardio drumming workshops for children and adults in February and March.

Cardio drumming is a unique and fun way of exercising and increasing your stamina, motivation and focus. The workshops are free for residents from Foxhill, Mulberry Park and Combe Down.

What is cardio drumming?

Cardio drumming takes a simple movement (drumming) and turns it into a full-body workout that leaves you smiling, sweating and feeling great. Studies show that when you enjoy a workout you’re more likely to do it again and make it part of a routine.

What happens at a cardio drumming workshop?

Each workshop includes rhythm, exercise and relaxation.

Cardio drumming is suitable for everyone, you’ll learn rhythms and exercise at a level appropriate to your fitness.

The workshop starts with a warm up and then different rhythms and movements. This is followed by a High Intensity Training session of one minute intervals of intensive drumming at a pace that is comfortable yet challenging with varying levels of rhythm exercises.

Studies show that High Intensity Training increases cardiovascular fitness and promotes healthy blood glucose levels.

Benefits of cardio drumming

You'll feel healthier, happier, energised and invigorated

It's fun learning new skills and rhythms

It will increase your stamina, motivation and focus

It reduces stress

Cardio drumming also improves circulation, boosts immune system and reduces illness

Cardio drumming at The Hub

The free workshops are held at The Hub, Curo’s new community building in Mulberry Park, and hosted by percussionist and award winning facilitator Paul Midgley from Twin Wave.

The workshops are funded by Curo through our Community Chest Grant scheme. The Community Chest provides grants to support initiatives that make a positive contribution to neighbourhoods where we work.

Saturday sessions: 2 March, 9 March, 30 March, 6 April
9am-10am (families) and 10am-11am (adults)
Register for the family sessions
Register for the adult sessions

A stay at the Wellbeing House: Michael's story

Michael, pictured, is one of many people who have stayed at our Wellbeing House since it opened in 2015. The Wellbeing House is a spacious Victorian property in Bath, offering a place for people to stay if they’re experiencing mental or emotional distress.

Michael has Myalgic Encephalopathy, or ME, a debilitating illness that affects around 250,000 people in Britain. Michael also suffered from anxiety and depression and was being supported by his local Mental Health Team who referred Michael to the Wellbeing House.

When Michael came to the Wellbeing House he was living in shared accommodation and was having problems with other tenants causing noise. Michael had lost his job because of the effects of ME and was finding it difficult to get enough rest. At an already difficult time, this unpleasant and noisy home environment heightened Michael’s anxiety and depression.

By coming into the Wellbeing House Michael was able to get the peace and quiet he needed. He stayed at the house on three different occasions and we were able to signpost him to other agencies who could help him further.

Today Michael says he feels on the road to recovery – he’s also moved out of his shared house and now has his own Curo property.
