Bath resident and Curo customer Rebecca West recently completed an administration work placement at Mulberry Park with construction contractor Rydon. The experience transformed not only her career but her life. Here’s what she had to say:
I'd worked in retail for 25 years until, in November 2016, I had an accident which resulted in a hip injury. I wasn't able to able to walk properly for 10 months. Due to this I also sadly lost my job.
All this changed in July 2017 when I had a routine visit from Lauren at Curo and she saw my predicament. Lauren made a suggestion that perhaps I could get a desk job which would give my hip time to recover. I thought this was a great idea, especially as I felt bored being at home all the time and I really wanted to feel useful again.
The next day I got in touch with the Work Wise Team at Curo to see what they could do to help. I went to my appointment with a support worker from the team and I must admit I was just expecting career advice and nothing more, but I was so wrong. She asked me how I felt about college courses and suggested that I could do different computing and admin courses through Adult Community Learning at Bath College. I agreed that it sounded a really good idea so she kindly set these up for me.
She also told me about Curo’s Work Placement Programme and asked me how I would feel doing a Curo work placement along with the courses. She then told me that Rydon Construction were looking for an Administrator. It meant I could learn and practice computing and admin which hopefully could lead to getting a job in that particular career. I agreed to this and couldn't wait to get started.
Everything then happened very quickly. I started my courses in September 2017 and a few weeks after this I began my work placement. I really enjoyed the courses and learnt so much from them. I also enjoyed my work placement – it’s been one of the best career experiences of my life. I’ve now found a job as a Receptionist and Administrator-Secretary with another company which I start in the next few weeks.
I can’t believe how in a few short months my life has changed. I never thought about college or knew about work placements and all the valuable experience they give you. I highly recommend the Curo Work Placement Programme. It can change your life for the better, as it has mine.
I thought at my age I couldn’t do this kind of thing and it’s proved me wrong. I was in a really dark place and this just changed everything and made me feel like anything is possible.”
