Celebrate Silver Sunday with Curo Community Connect

On 21 October 2018 Curo’s Community Connect team is celebrating Silver Sunday with a free event in Weston-super-Mare to help older people try something new, meet new people and connect with services and community groups available locally.

Curo Community Development Coordinator Marion Erison said: “We’re offering a free cream tea, with musical entertainment and a chance to try Fitsteps – a great way to stay fit. There’s also a prize draw to win some fabulous prizes kindly donated by local businesses.”

The event runs between 2 and 4.30pm at Kewstoke Village Hall in Kewstoke, Weston-super-Mare. Places are limited and booking is essential so contact Curo Community Connect on 01934 888 803 to reserve your free place. Transport to and from the event is available on a first-come first-served basis.

Silver Sunday is a nationwide initiative; a day of fun and free activities for older people. Led by The Sir Simon Milton Foundation, Silver Sunday is designed to celebrate the value and knowledge older people contribute to our communities while also combating loneliness and isolation.

Christabel Flight, Founder of Silver Sunday and Trustee of the Sir Simon Milton Foundation said: “We are delighted Curo Community Connect are a part of the 1,000 events happening up and down the country this year for Silver Sunday. It sounds like such an uplifting event – with music, fitness and cake always proving so very popular.”

Marion added: “As social prescribers in North Somerset, Curo’s Community Connect service is encouraging local people to be more socially active. We support people to improve both their physical and mental wellbeing and provide opportunities to make new friends and connect with other people.

“Social prescribing is a way to help people boost their health and wellbeing through social activities – that could be anything from joining a walking group, going to a dance, volunteering or learning something new.”

Community Connect is provided by housing association Curo and works closely with other organisations. St Monica Trust have provided funding for this event, with exercise sessions provided by Carol Hartley of Sweet Results Fitness and Musical Entertainment by Mike Mesham of Rhythm and Reflection.
