What happens when a patient is ready to leave hospital, but cannot return home because the right support isn’t there? That’s the situation 'James' faced when he was ready to leave hospital following a stroke.
Step-down from hospital accommodation is designed to offer a home for patients in Bath and North East Somerset who are ready to leave hospital, but need somewhere to stay with a little more support.
Curo has six apartments which are offered free to patients for up to 12 weeks and care is provided by our partner, Sirona Health and Care. Additional support is then offered during the stay by a specialist Curo support advisor helping people to return home or find more suitable accommodation following their stay.
Aimed at patients in recovery from operations, in need of physical or emotional support or simply to access future living arrangements, Step-down could be the answer.
‘James’ (not his real name) was one such patient who was referred by an occupational therapist following a stroke. He was unable to return home because his property had steps and no lift. He was only able to leave hospital as a result of this Step-down service.
James was jointly assessed by Curo and Sirona and aids and adaptations were installed in the flat to meet his mobility needs. His wife, ‘Charlotte’ also moved in as she was receiving treatment for cancer and unable to remain on her own.
A co-ordinated approach and visits from re-ablement services, combined with Curo’s Step-down support, ensured everything was covered.
It was soon apparent that James and Charlotte would need continued support so, following assessment, steps were made to move into Extra Care housing where care provision would remain in place following the twelve week stay.
Sadly, shortly after moving, Charlotte passed away but James said: “We both had peace of mind knowing I would be settled and safe when Charlotte was not around. Step-down is a halfway house from hospital to home with incredible attention from everyone; carers, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and Curo. We were surprised at the help available: the service is brilliant, superb – there should be more.
“Everything we could have possibly wanted was there, things in the flat and people visiting. It was a positive experience which we didn’t know was available.”
