Check out ‘Help to Save’

Help to Save is a type of savings account. It allows certain people on a low income entitled to Working Tax Credit or receiving Universal Credit to get a bonus of 50p for every £1 they save over 4 years (check here to see if you are eligible).

Help to Save is backed by the government so all savings in the scheme are secure. What’s not to like with money for free! Follow the link; https://www.gov.uk/get-help-savings-low-income.

You could alternatively check out a credit union. Credit unions offer an alternative to traditional banks and building societies for saving and borrowing. They can sometimes beat the rates on the high street. Credit unions offer savings and loans and some offer current accounts. Saving is safe with the credit union and your money is also easy to access when you need it.

Buy now pay later?

As I always say, ’if it sounds too good to be true it probably is!’

Warning: ‘buy-now-pay later’ is one of the fastest growing forms of borrowing and it’s getting people into debt. When customers have a problem there is no ombudsman to go to because it is unregulated.

The buy-now-pay-later offer is to spread the cost of your spending, but you still have to pay it back eventually. While spreading the cost might sound helpful it can tempt you to overspend, especially as the lending companies make it sound and look so simple.

The message is, if you don’t have the money, please don’t be tempted by these offers, spend what you can afford.
