Interview tips

Your interview is your chance to really sell yourself and show an employer that you are the right candidate for the job.

The key to a successful interview is preparation!

Before your interview:

  • Read the job description or role profile carefully.
  • Research the company you might be working for; what are their values? What are their current projects? What interests you about them?
  • Think of some examples you could talk about to show off your skills; can you think of a time you gave really good customer service? When did you deal with a difficult situation and what did you do to resolve it?
  • If you're worried about forgetting what to say, don't be afraid to make notes. You can bring these into the interview with you and let the interviewer know that you might refer to them.
  • Plan how you're going to get there. If you're using public transport make sure you think about possible delays and if you're driving think about the traffic in the area.
  • Get your outfit ready the day before, have a shower or bath and make sure you are clean and presentable on the day of the interview. Always dress to impress!

During the interview:

  • Arrive 10-15 minutes early. This will give you time to relax as you wait and think about what you're going to say.
  • Try to stay calm. Your interviewer will understand that you may be nervous. If you become flustered, take a deep breath or have a sip of water.
  • Listen to the questions carefully and answer as fully as you can. Try to always use an example in your answers to show your interviewer that you have the experience they're looking for.
  • If you haven't heard a question properly or you've forgotten what they asked then ask the interviewer to repeat the question, don't assume or guess, you might get it wrong!
  • Always think of some questions for the interviewer, this will show them that want to find out more and that you're really interested in the role.

After the interview:

  • If you're successful the employer will contact you to let you know. They will agree on a start date and send you any paperwork you need to complete before you start
  • If you are unsuccessful you will also be contacted by the employer. Always ask for feedback; your interviewer may have some tips of advice for your next interview to help you be successful.
