Memory loss: Brian and Angela's story
‘Brian’ and ‘Angela’ (not their real names) heard about Curo’s Memory Café in their local paper. They decided to come along as Brian had been having problems with his memory for some time – they felt this was just what they needed to get something done.
Originally from London the couple moved to the Bath area many years ago and started a new life, running a local business together with family who also live close by.
By coming to the café, we’ve been able to talk to Brian and Angela about their situation, arranging home visits and support, and helping to get a proper diagnosis for Brian.
We’ve also helped Brian to claim Attendance Allowance and apply for a reduction in their council tax bill, saving them money which will help to pay for extra help when needed.
They’re now Memory Café regulars and feel it’s given them both the information and knowledge to move forward with their lives alongside the support and friendship of others at the café.
Finding out more about Brian’s dementia has given them some control back over their lives. “We now know what we are dealing with; it has a name,” says Angela. “Knowing there’s someone at the end of the phone if we need help is so reassuring. We wouldn’t know where to turn to otherwise.”
We can help if you are worried about your own, or a loved one’s memory, whether a diagnosis has been made or not and you can speak to us in confidence either over the phone or we can visit you at your home.
